Ala Moana Center’s Fukubukuro

On Jan. 1, more than 40 retailers at Ala Moana Center are offering “Happy Grab Bags” for Fukubukuro, a time-honored Japanese retail tradition. Shoppers will love the special bags, as the mystery merchandise inside the bags will be valued at twice the cost of the bags (for example, a bag selling for $50 would contain at least $100 in merchandise at full retail value), and all bags are sealed to prevent shoppers from knowing the contents until they are opened.

Participating retailers include Aloha Hobby Shop, Animation Magic, Anteprima Wirebag, Artlines, Bag ‘n Baggage, Bally, Betsey Johnson, Cathedral Gift Shop, Dewcarat, Diesel, The Disney Store, Emporio Armani, Fendi, Folli Follie, Godiva, Gucci, Lacoste, Le Grand Marqet, LeSportsac, Local Motion, Locals Only, L’Occitane, Loco Boutique, Lupicia, Martin & MacArthur, Maui Divers Jewelry, Max & Co., Metropark, Michael Kors, Neiman Marcus, Pillow Pets, Salvatore Ferragamo, Shanghai Tang, Silver Rhino, Spiral Girl, Swatch, The Pacific Place Tea Garden, Thinker Tots, Thinker Toys, Valerie Joseph, Vera Bradley and W Salon.

Each participating store will offer a limited number of bags, which will contain a variety of products from that particular retailer. Bags will be available while supplies last, and all sales are final on Fukubukuro merchandise.
