“Andy South’s Fashion Journey,” a celebration of local fashion designer Andy South’s road to success, will be the theme for the First Friday event Aug. 5 at Pacific Gateway Center’s Lemon Grass Cafe at 83 N. King St.

The event starts at 5 p.m. and will feature the Project Runway Season 8 finalist’s favorite drink, food and music, as well as mannequins displaying designs from his early years to present day.

A one-of-a-kind dress designed by South also will be sold as part of a silent auction. Bids will be taken until 8:30 p.m.

There also will be a special video chronicling South’s fascinating life from his days working on his family’s farm to his considerable success in the fashion world.

South was born in Kailua, graduated from Waianae High School and studied in the Fashion Technology program at Honolulu Community College.

He has designed gowns for Miss Hawaii and Miss Hawaii USA contestants, and during Project Runway, he learned that host Heidi Klum would be including three of his designs in her athletic wear line.

His new line, Andy South, launches in Neiman Marcus this September.

According to Pacific Gateway Center, all proceeds from Andy South’s Fashion Journey event at First Friday will go toward helping refugees who are fleeing persecution in their home country and arriving in Hawaii with little clothing or means of support.

South, 24, was born in Hawaii of Laotian parents who had fled persecution. Pacific Gateway Center provided assistance to his family and later on continued projects in aquaculture with them.

Over the past 35 years, it also has helped more than 50,000 refugees, immigrants and low-income people. The center operates two incubators (kitchen and businesses) for people who want to build skills that will lead to selfsufficiency while respecting their diverse cultural heritages.
