Recycle Your Old Shoes At Niketown

For the first time ever, Nike is partnering with the city to present the Nike Reuse-A-Shoe Campaign. Mayor Mufi Hannemann learned about this program, and as an avid athlete and champion of youth sports, as well as an advocate for the environment, he wanted to partner with Niketown to make more people aware of shoe recycling through Nike’s Reuse-a-Shoe program, and increase environmental awareness in Honolulu. Since 1993, Nike has been recycling both post-consumer, non-metal-containing athletic shoes of any brand, and Nike shoes that are returned due to a material or workmanship flaw. The shoes collected are put through a grinding process resulting in a Nike Grind material that is used to make new sports surfaces, such as soccer and football fields, basketball and tennis courts, and tracks and playground surfacing.

Activities include:

-School Shoe Recycling Contest: All Oahu elementary, intermediate and high schools should have received a Nike Reuse-A-Shoe recycling drive packet which includes simple instructions and supplies needed to participate in the School Shoe Recycling Contest. Schools who collect the most shoes by April 30 will win a Nike Equipment Package valued at $3,000.

-Creative Recycled Kicks Contest: Turn your old athletic shoes into something useful, or into a work of art.Winners will win a new pair of Nike shoes from Niketown. For more information, visit www.kingkalakauaplaza.com

-Save on a new pair of shoes at Niketown: Recycle an old pair of shoes at Niketown Honolulu throughout the month of April and you’ll save on a new pair of shoes ($10 off shoes $50 to $100 or $20 off shoes over $100). Some restrictions apply.

-Community Shoe Recycling Day at Niketown, April 30 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Schools will drop their collected shoes off at Niketown where store officials plan to build a huge “mountain” of shoes to be recycled. Entries for the Creative Recycled Kicks Contest will also be dropped off for judging and display. There will also be games and prizes, as well as a DJ spinning music. The Kaimana Band will perform, and Aveda Salon & Spa will provide free foot massages and information on its Earth Month efforts. There also will be earth-friendly exhibits and presentations by Niketown and the Hawaii Nature Center, as well as free refreshments from Jamba Juice. At 2 p.m. Mayor Hannemann and Niketown representatives will announce all of the contest winners. And to conclude the event, Matson will pack the shoes into one of its containers and prepare it for shipping to the recycling center in Oregon.
