One of the first assignments I received upon joining the MidWeek ohana in 2007 was the Good Neighbor column, a space dedicated to spreading good news about every-day people around Hawaii striving to make our island home a better place to live.
So it is only fitting that my last Good Neighbor entry be one about three individuals working to put the “neighbor” back in neighborhood.
Cherilyn Inouye, Annie Koh and Brent Kakesako (as seen from left) want to challenge you to “Live Aloha in Your Neighborhood,” a campaign launched earlier this year to encourage people to reach out to their neighbors to build stronger communities and lasting relationships through face-to-face interaction.
“Facebook and Twitter are valuable tools for engaging young people, but ultimately, face-to-face interactions are what create lasting relationships,” says Inouye. “To build or re-build relationships requires that we actually break down that technological barrier so that we can improve our quality of life and our communities.”
As part of the challenge, the three committee members each organized a get-together last month in their respective neighborhoods: Inouye, a Kaimuki resident, and Kakesako, who lives in Manoa, both invited neighbors over for a potlock, while Koh arranged for a first aid workshop to be held at her Ala Moana apartment building.
“I’m a newcomer to Hawaii,” says Koh, who moved to Hawaii in January 2010, “and for me, Live Aloha was an amazing chance to learn about Hawaii’s ‘spirit of place’ and help nurture the amazing community ties that make Hawaii so unique.”
