After the overwhelming success of last year’s inaugural Patriot Golf Day, more than 10,000 golf clubs nationwide are setting up to raise funds for this year’s chosen charity, Folds of Honor (Aug. 29 to Sept. 1). Here to help put Ko Olina Golf Club’s name down for the second time is Lt. Billy Hurley III of the United States Navy.
“It was obvious in meeting him that not only was he an exceptional, skilled golfer, he was an outstanding young man with great manners and values,” says Greg Nichols, Ko Olina Golf Club general manager and director of golf, who was first introduced to the young lieutenant last year. “It was refreshing to meet someone like Billy who was committed to serving his country before going after his ultimate goal of playing on the PGA Tour.”
Hurley first made his way to Hawaii last year aboard the naval destroyer the USS Chung-Hoon, which is currently berthed at Pearl Harbor. In fact, he has only just returned from spending a week of training out at sea. When he’s not busy serving his country, he enjoys snorkeling, hiking or walking along the beach with his wife, Heather (above), and their 18-month-old son, Will.
But, Hurley says, he always tries to make time for his first love, golfing. He first picked up a club as a toddler and was soon spending many days with his father on the greens in his home town of Leesburg, Va. While working toward a degree in quantitative economics at the U.S. Naval Academy, he played Division I college golf, climbing as high as No. 2 in the Golfweek World Amateur Rankings. After raking numerous awards and accolades, he officially turned pro in 2006 after playing seven PGA Tours, three Nationwide Tours and other mini-tour events. Most recently, Hurley played at the 2008 Hawaii Pearl Open in February.
As for now, he is quickly regaining his land legs so he can tee off at 10 a.m. this Saturday and lead a free hour-long golf clinic with Nichols and fellow golf academy professionals Travis Joerger and Tommy Hines. Immediately after the clinic, two lucky individuals will join Hurley and Tom Fargo, former commander of the U.S. Pacific Command, for lunch at Roy’s Ko Olina followed by 18 holes of golf.
Throughout the day, golfers are asked to donate $1 to support Folds of Honor, a foundation providing educational scholarships for dependents and spouses of service members killed or disabled while serving our country.
