Dr. Cecile Sebastian doesn’t just make sure her patients’ teeth are healthy - she makes sure they have something healthy to bite into.
The general dentist is partnering up with the Hawaii Foodbank for a third year to help in the continual effort to meet the ever-growing needs of Hawaii’s hungry residents.
On March 24 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sebastian and her staff will be set up in Tamarind Park downtown collecting donations of canned meats, soups, vegetables and fruits. The day’s tally will be added to what has already been procured since the beginning of the year from dental clinics throughout the state with help from the Honolulu County Dental Society.
“We’re going to see if we can encourage internal efforts, because that’s how you can really amass a large amount,” says Sebastian, a health care coalition member for the Foodbank. “On top of the dental community, we’re going to try to go to downtown businesses as well.”
Last year the combined efforts brought in approximately 5,000 pounds of food, and this year Sebastian says she hopes to see that number doubled.
“The need is greater this year, and even though everyone’s resources have dwindled - everyone’s suffering from this recession and economy - I think the solution for that is to just get more people involved,” she says. “We still have a very ambitious goal, you might say. But it’s necessary. It has to be done.”
The busy mother of four (she and husband Wade Nobuhara, an orthodontist, are hands-on parents to daughters Chloe, Claire and Calais and son Carter) also volunteers her time with various community causes, including the annual Hawaii Future Dentists Symposium, a free event in October for high school juniors and seniors to learn more about the dental profession, and the National Foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped.
“That’s one of my favorite things to do for the community,” the East Oahu resident says with a perfect smile. “The long road is worth the journey. We all (dentists she volunteers with) get satisfaction from our careers because we can give back to the community and do a lot of good with what we do.”
