Hard to believe, but Thanksgiving is only a week away. And while many Hawaii families are preparing for the big feast by stocking their pantries and refrigerators with all the fixin’s that go into the annual turkey day spread, many others are struggling to just get by.
Thankfully, we have the Hawaii Foodbank to turn to when times are tough. But because of the economic hardships over the past few years, the food bank has been struggling just like the rest of us to keep its shelves filled.
Enter Christina Laney-Wycheck and Yumi Laney. The Kahala Associates Realtors, who also happen to be daughter and mother, created their own food drive in 2008 and will be holding it again this Saturday, Nov. 20, in their Pearl City neighborhood (on Hoolaulea Street near Don Quijote/Foodland as well as on Hoohai and Hoolana streets).
“We heard that the food bank was running low and we decided to do something about it,” says Laney. She explains that she and her daughter decided to start a door-to-door campaign because they felt “we should go to the people and their homes and the food would be right there if they wanted to donate anything.
“You usually forget to bring in food for the other food drives, or you don’t bring more than a couple of cans,” she adds. “People are very generous, even in trying times, but many are also very busy and don’t get to the food bank as often as they would like.”
Last year they collected more than 600 pounds of food, and this year they hope to bring in even more. Their families will help collect donation bags the two women handed out last week, and if anyone is interested in starting their own neighborhood food drive, they may contact Laney-Wycheck at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
“I think if many people decided to do this type of food drive instead of the drop-off types, we would see much more participating and donating out of convenience,” Laney-Wycheck says. “We are proud to take this opportunity to give back to our community and to lend a helping hand to families in need.”
