Any way you say it, peace is a universal concept that bridges languages, cultures and races, much in the same way music does. For that reason, it seems destined that the first-ever @RTIMOS Production “Peace Internationally” benefit concert should combine some of the best artists and performers from Oahu and beyond in an expression of respect, love and - what else? - peace.
“@RTIMOS is a ‘concert’ venue, music to inspire peace,” says Colin Fong, one of the performers and a key supporter of the event.
“We’ve been close friends for many, many years, and lots of people know him and love him, but his devotion to this cause has been something else. The amount of volunteer hours that have gone into this production would blow most people away,” professes Ema Billings, fundraising director and board member of @RTIMOS Productions, a nonprofit organization founded in 2007 on the ideals of bringing peace and unity to worldwide communities through music, song, dance and other art forms.
“@RTIMOS is an unique event. There are many different kinds of music, different groups ... many generous prizes being given away. We’d like to see the local communities benefit from these, enjoy the show, as well as bring awareness to the challenges that others face on a daily basis in other parts of the world,” explains Fong.
Ironically, his line of work isn’t exactly what you’d call peaceful. After graduating from Punahou School in 1973, he went straight to work doing martial arts, racing cars and jumping out of high buildings as a professional stuntman for more than 100 movies and TV series including Magnum P.I., Murder She Wrote, Lethal Weapon 4, Mighty Joe Young, and commercials for local and international companies such as First Hawaiian Bank, Zippy’s, Nissan and Coca Cola (Japan), among many others.
Fong now splits his time between working as stunt coordinator with Lost, vice president of the Hawaii Stunt Association and owner of the successful lock/safe/key business Lockout Specialist. He also volunteers his musical talents at the Plaza Club, his church, anniversary and birthday parties and various gatherings, including tomorrow night’s concert. Catch the stuntman in action on the ivories with his good friend Ryan Tang on ukulele as well as Fawwaz Jubran, Cynthia Li Sin Ying, Elad Vazana, Justin Ritchie, Haberdashery, The Nani Laie Serenaders and The MOZO Band from 6 to 8 p.m. May 21 at the Central Union Church Parish Hall (1660 S. Beretania St.) as they share their talents and aloha in raising awareness and proceeds for children in Israel and Pakistan.
