“The backpacks are something they can own,” says Wong, president of Prudential’s non-profit group Locations Foundation for the past five years. “Some kids only had shopping bags.”
The students who received the backpacks were at The Next Step homeless shelter, the Waianae Civic Center shelter and Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Resource Center on Maui.
Locations Foundation is dedicated to giving back to the community. About 130 agents donate 1 percent of their pay, as well as their time. Wong, a real estate agent who works out of both the Diamond Head and Kailua offices, has been a part of the company’s volunteer efforts since she joined 18 years ago.
“People want to give back,” she says. “It’s great because our company does that.”
Wong says the backpack project started six years ago when someone noted that women in abuse shelters with their children have so little. So the foundation decided to give the children backpacks filled with school supplies.
“It’s one of our most rewarding projects,” says Wong.
The foundation has also donated $5,000 to a school repair project for Hawaii 3Rs, and co-workers also rolled up their sleeves to help paint. In addition to sponsoring a trip to the Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park for sick children from HUGS (Help, Understanding and Group Support), the volunteers enjoyed the day accompanying the children on the water rides. Another volunteer project bought tickets and popcorn for a children’s group to see the Harry Potter movie.
Wong says one of the challenges of taking on the projects is coordination, and she gives kudos to the project chairs who organize and execute the good deeds.
In other personal volunteer efforts, Wong is a religious education teacher at St. John Vianney. The Kailua resident also is on the board of Women In Need.
When she’s not busy working, she enjoys spending time with her husband, Barry, and being a soccer mom for her two children Michael, 15, and Michelle, 14.
