Darlene Tokunaga And Ahi
How much is that doggy in the board shorts?
That’s the question folks at The Pet Spot at Ward Centers may be asking when they see Ahi, the blue sockdog and mascot for local company Icy Pooch Pops.
According to owner Darlene Tokunaga, she decided to put her beloved surfer dog up for bid to raise much-needed money for local animal shelters.
“The economic situation has been hard on folks, and that affects their pets,” says Tokunaga, a lifelong animal lover. “Because so many animals are in shelters looking for homes, they need support more than ever now.”
To be the proud owner of this little pooch with big aloha spirit (check out his blog at ahidog.blogspot.com), it’s all about being the highest bidder. Bid forms are available at the store, and Ahi will have his donation jar along in case anyone wants to throw him a bone. Online bids also are welcome by e-mailing Tokunaga at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address), subject Adopt Ahi Bid.
One hundred percent of the proceeds and donations raised during the dog days of summer will go to Oahu SPCA, K9 Kokua and Friends for Life.
Ahi is up for adoption at The Pet Spot through July 4 before moving to other select pet stores. He’ll also lend a paw at Da Kine Canine Festival in Kailua come September and the Humane Society’s annual Pet Walk in October.
“I think he may be the first sockdog to be an official walker,” adds Tokunaga, who also owns a Shih Tzu named Moe Moe, who beats the summer heat by playing in the sprinklers.
Another way dogs can find relief: Icy Pooch Pops.
“The tropical heat can be hard on our furry friends. Our dogsicles are one way dogs can get that,” says the Makiki resident. Icy Pooch Pops are available at The Pet Spot, Koolau Pets, Krazy Kanine and other select pet stores. Visit www.icypoochpops.com for more information.
