Most of those who know Eyad Ahmad (above, right) describe him as a soft-spoken and modest individual. But during a life-or-death incident last year, Ahmad earned the title of hero.
On Jan. 31, 2007, the Harbor Court security site supervisor received a frantic call from resident Lynne Armstrong. Upon hearing her gasps on the other line, Ahmad quickly realized Armstrong was choking. He leapt into action, directing another officer to call 911 before rushing to the scene himself. When he reached Armstrong, Ahmad administered the Heimlich Maneuver and successfully dislodged a piece of chicken from her airway. Emergency crews who arrived on site later commented that Ahmad’s quick response had saved the victim’s life.
Supervisor Courtney Hannah heard this story and nominated Ahmad for Lex Brodie’s ABOVE & BEYOND Award. According to Kevin Jones, promotions director of Salem Media of Hawaii Inc., the ABOVE & BEYOND Award is meant to honor those whose actions go above and beyond the call of duty.
“The idea is to honor those in uniform - often Armed Services members but not always, as in the case of Mr. Ahmad - who serve proudly every day with dedication and humility but often without recognition,” he explains. Jones added that they chose Ahmad because of “his quick-thinking professionalism and his care for the residents he watches over.”
On Nov. 16, Ahmad was “surprised” by other supervisors and fellow security officers at the observation deck of the downtown Honolulu building that houses commercial offices and luxury condominium spaces. During a brief ceremony emceed by KHCM program director Corry Reynolds, Ahmad’s actions were applauded and recounted in speeches from Armstrong, Hannah and Lex Brodie’s president Scott Williams (pictured above left).
“It is very comforting to know assistance is literally just a phone call away,” Armstrong stated.
KHCM 97.5 FM management and partner Lex Brodie’s came up with this concept and began presenting the award last April. Jones says Ahmad is the third recipient of the ABOVE & BEYOND Award so far, but that they aim to make this a monthly event. Honorees are chosen from public-solicited nominations sent to the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, MidWeek, KHON-TV Channel 2 News, KHCM 97.5 FM and other Salem Media of Hawaii radio stations.
