Synergy HomeCare owners Feli (on left) and Richard Caballero are waging a war this Saturday against one of the world’s most infamous bad guys - hunger.
Their battle plan? Stage a food collection drive for the Hawaii Foodbank so that all donations will be accessible to the greatest number of Hawaii’s hungry.
“Being in the home-care industry, I meet older citizens daily and have witnessed firsthand how some live below poverty level due to financial hardship,” says Feli Caballero. “Along with that, we have also witnessed homeless children right in our own neighborhood, probably getting by with cookies and bottled water.
“It is simply something that cannot be ignored. Hunger hits everyone.” The food drive begins at 9 a.m. April 9 and is scheduled to go on until 1 p.m. in front of the Ward Court at 320 building (320 Ward Ave.). The Caballeros also have made their office space (Suite 207) available for drop-off donations during business hours Friday. Call 597-7014 to learn more.
In conjunction with the food drive, free Vial of L.I.F.E. emergency information kits will be given to those who bring in 10 canned goods or more.
“I truly believe in the old saying ‘do unto others what you want done unto you,’” says the mother of four, who has passed this spirit of giving unto her children. For example, one daughter volunteers as a teacher’s aide at Bible school, and her son regularly helps prepare meals for the homeless.
“I’m proud to say they are all actively involved in the community,” she states, noting that her own generosity was inherited from her parents, Flora and Felipe Bueno, who ran a care home in Waipahu that the Caballeros continue to operate today.
The couple hopes to collect 5,000 pounds of food and $5,000 in donations, but “since it’s our first year, we’re hopeful for an excellent turnout!”
“To put it simply,” Caballero states, “I just want to help the community in any way I can.”
