First Hawaiian Bank employees and retirees live up to the motto “Yes, you can!”
Proof: Kokua Mai, FHB’s annual employee charitable campaign, recently contributed $572,138 to 38 local charities.
“We have the best employees,” says bank president Bob Harrison. “There are a few things I can truly brag about, but I’ll brag about our employees.”
According to Harrison, the giving campaign began three years ago as a way for bank employees to give back to the communities in which they live and work. More than 90 percent of employees participated in the companywide event this year. And it’s the employees who choose which programs will benefit from Kokua Mai.
“They look for different agencies that help children, the homeless, the hungry, and try to touch upon all those areas that affect our community,” explains human resources division senior vice president Iris Matsumoto, who has been with the company for 13 years. “What’s so amazing about the caring spirit of our employees is that we find, when many of them are struggling, they respond with even more generosity. The culture of giving is something we absolutely look for in this bank.”
Both Harrison and Matsumoto stress that running a campaign such as this starts with leadership, which is all the more reason they both deserve a bit of the spotlight for overseeing a drive that has raised $1.7 million for 400 charities throughout Hawaii, Guam and Saipan.
“We all work side by side,” Matsumoto says, “to make sure the campaign touches as many lives as we can.”
