For teens Jamie Ma, Jordan Quenga and Tiffany-Amber Rivera, hard work doesn’t end when the school bell rings.
The three Moanalua High School juniors-to-be have been spending their after-school hours volunteering at Salt Lake-Moanalua Library since March. Teen library volunteer coordinator Marcia Ikuta says they each bring a different skill to the table: Rivera creates unique artwork for their summer reading displays, Ma is a pro at paperwork, and Quenga can navigate the computer systems with ease.
But the three have tacked even more onto their to-do list. Since April, they have been busy planning, painting and calling around to coordinate a canned food drive, set for 5 to 6 p.m. today (July 8) at the library.
“The economy has been so unstable lately, we just did this because we wanted to,” Rivera states. “It takes a long time, a lot of organizing and a lot of communicating between people.”
“A lot of it was just on-the-spot planning,” adds Quenga. That involved enlisting the support of Moanalua’s Leo Club and the Pacific Outpost 501st Legion. “I had gone to a convention and seen the Star Wars guys there, so I came back to these guys and we thought, ‘What can we do so we can have a tie?’ So we all brainstormed and came up with a food drive,” Ikuta recalls.
Three Storm Troopers have volunteered their time to hold a meet-and-greet with fans of the popular sci-fi franchise, and each canned good donated to Hawaii Foodbank earns a play on the Wii game station to be set up at the event. “It took a long time to put everything together,” Ma says of their foray into community service. “But it was fun.”
Adds Quenga: “Overall, we make a really good team.”
The Salt Lake-Moanalua Library is located at 3225 Salt Lake Blvd. For more information, call Ikuta at the library, 831-6832.
