News flash: For the first time, the Central Union Church Thrift Shop fashion show fund-raiser will be held in the evening. Fashion show coordinator Joan Rodby and thrift shop volunteer Sylvia Burns look forward to the potluck function Feb. 10 at the parish hall from 6 to 9 p.m.
“It’s great knowing we are doing good for the community and our church,” says Burns, a Waikiki resident.
The 173-year-old church provides dessert and drinks, and the public is asked to bring a dish to share. The evening also features a silent auction, and music by Puamana. Thrift shop items will be on sale in addition to the clothing modeled that night.
Burns, 91, who has volunteered with the thrift shop for 25 years, also volunteers about two days a week at the Waikiki Kapahulu Library.
“We give a lot of clothing and household items to people who really need them, and money raised goes to the church for outreach,” notes Burns. Funds from the second-hand store go to programs for youth, elderly, and college scholarships.
Fellow thrift shop volunteer and choir member Rodby has been in charge of recruiting the models and selecting the clothing for 15 years.
“It’s amazing what attire you can put on people that looks marvelous,” explains Rodby, 74, as she rattles off her models’ names. The 1947 Roosevelt grad says the 30 runway models are diverse; they can be skinny, full-figured, young or, shall we say, experienced.
One of the hardest aspects of organizing the fashion show, Rodby says, is “staying sane - all the models come in at once.” She says she needs to have everything written down including which bags, hats, shawls and scarves go with each outfit. Rodby’s volunteer resume includes the Outdoor Circle, Queen’s hospital gift shop board, and the Art Academy cafeteria. Her husband Dick owned Kemoo Farm Restaurant in Wahiawa until selling it about seven years ago. He’s also active with his own volunteer work on the board of the Arizona Memorial, Hui Hanai and Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame.
The thrift shop, which opened 30 years ago, has 100 volunteers.
The Central Union Church Thrift Shop is located at 1600 S. Beretania St. at the corner of Punahou Street and is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays. For more information, call 440-3055.
