Sacred Hearts graduate and vocal coach Neva Rego did such a great job as co-chair of last year’s Sacred Hearts scholarship fundraiser gala - the whole event - that this year she was invited to be the co-chair of the silent auction for the 10th annual Scholarship Fund Gala on Oct. 6.
This is her debut effort helping out with the silent auction that starts at 5 p.m. that evening at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom, followed by dinner at 7 p.m.
“It’s not my forte, but I’ll do anything to help out,” says Rego. “So many others are helping out, and everybody has worked hard on this.”
Rego gives thanks to her co-chair, Villa Roma owner Audrey Fu, and all who are working on the function. So far auction items include a Peggy Chun painting, quilts, plates, restaurant gift certificates, jewelry, gym memberships, a weekend getaway for two at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort, Coach bags, Tori Richards clothing, Villa Roma apparel, and items hand-made by the students.
Rego, a Kaimuki resident, says she won’t be singing, but Sacred Hearts senior Tani Lynn Fujimoto will be performing at the function along with musical entertainment by the concert choir, jazz band and hula dancers. Fellow singer Melveen Leed serves as mistress of ceremonies. She’s pictured above with Rego and students Brittney Shinsato and Mele Meyer.
Three mother and daughter pairs are being honored at the gala: Rose Pang Kwock, Sacred Hearts grad ‘64, and Lorie Kwock Nagata, ‘76; Eilzabeth Russell, ‘37, and Victoria Russell Kennedy, ‘64; Roberta Murray Oneha, ‘54, and Mary Frances Oneha, ‘77.
Last year’s event raised more than $170,000, with 975 people in attendance. This year the goal is to raise $200,000 and to have 120 tables or 1,200 people.
Rego’s many accolades include being surprised at a recent dinner for the National Society of Arts and Letters with the 2005 Excellence in Education Award. She was also honored by the City Council in 2002 for Lifetime Commitment to Opera, and she was recognized as the 1997 Treasure of Kaimuki by Mayor Jeremy Harris. She was honored in 2003 as a Distinguished Alumni of Sacred Hearts Academy.
“It is such a joy, because I know it’s going to scholarships,” says Rego about volunteering on the fundraiser. “It pleases my heart to know the students who really want to attend can - even if their parents can’t afford it. I think it’s a wonderful school. They still teach those good old values of years past.”
