The proud feeling of giving a glamorous photo of yourself to your loved one is something to cherish. Susan Page Modeling Agency and School owner Patricia Stevens offered four military wives, whose husbands were deployed, the chance to take six weeks of the Women’s Image Program classes that culminated in a photo shoot.
Brook Masten, Bethany Nerheim, Holly Bates and Chelby Perez took the classes on makeup artistry, hairstyling, fashion, poise and social etiquette. The big finale of the class was a Champagne Photo Shoot where the women became queens for a day under the skilled hands of makeup artist and stylist Jessica Hoffman and photographer Marlow Holt.
“They could send the picture to their husbands,” says Stevens. “It’s a real pick-me-up for them. The wives were overwhelmed with their responsibilities, and we wanted to cheer the husbands up.”
The idea to help the military wives came when Stevens was considering doing a TV makeup show. She wanted the people on the show to have a real need. There were some military wives in the pilot for the show, and the feedback from them was great. Although the show didn’t become a series, Stevens wanted to reach out to the military community again.
In other acts of kindness, Stevens also donates classes to teenagers in the foster care program if she has an empty space.
“The feedback from the teens is that it helps them with their confidence,” notes Stevens. “They get a photo shoot, which is a physical reminder that takes them out of their regular lifestyle. It helps them feel good, and be special.”
Others to whom Stevens has offered scholarships are girls from underprivileged, single-parent families.
The school also is training the girls of Sacred Hearts Academy for a charity fashion show.
Stevens was a fashion buyer in London, where she also manufactured women’s clothing. She moved to Hawaii from England in the early 1980s. The Kahala resident joined Susan Page Modeling as director in 1986, which was founded in 1984 by MidWeek columnist Susan Page, a former Miss Texas and model. In 1993, Stevens bought the school.
Stevens’ husband, William, is a retired dentist.
