Peter Ng will join the likes of Dr. Livingston Wong, Irmgard Farden Aluli and former Gov. George Ariyoshi when he is installed April 5 as the 2009 Noblesse Oblige honoree at Maryknoll School’s Kekumano Award and Scholarship Dinner.
The award acknowledges those who have devoted their talents to the service of others, leading by example the school’s motto of Noblesse Oblige. No doubt Ng’s tireless commitment to his community over the past several decades serves as living proof that “to whom much is given, much is expected.”
“My mother was a volunteer at St. Theresa Church in Kalihi. She was a very religious person and inspired me to likewise be a volunteer,” Ng remembers of his introduction to public service.
Upon graduating from Hastings College of Law in 1964, he returned to the Islands to open his own law practice. That same year Ng began working with the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) Sunday School program at St. Theresa. Part of his duties were to raise funds to purchase supplies for the students, which he says he accomplished through chicken dinner sales.
He is now a trustee for the Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation, director of the Kukui Gardens Corporations, and serves as a Eucharistic minister and lector at Star of the Sea Church. He also has held leadership positions at The Marianist Center of Hawaii, Palolo Chinese Home, Hastings College of Law 1066 Foundation, Star of the Sea Church Finance Committee, Hawaii Tax Institute and the East Honolulu Rotary Club.
If that isn’t enough, in 1997 son-in-law Jeffrey Niebling joined the once sole practitioner, and the law firm of Ng & Niebling LLLC was born.
“I have been blessed by God with many gifts - intellectually, spiritually - and the ability to develop a successful law practice. It is important that I use these gifts to better the community around me,” states the 2007 Model Chinese Father of the Year.
Doors to the award ceremony open at 5 p.m. at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. There will be both live and silent auctions. Proceeds from the evening will benefit the Kekumano Scholarship Fund and the capital campaign for the Maryknoll School Community Center.
