Roland Chun, president of the West Honolulu Rotary Club for 2004-2005, joined forces with the Pearl Harbor Rotary to redo the roof on the Kalihi Kokua Center and paint the walkway. That’s just one of the many good deeds Chun oversaw during his term.
Chun says another project his group of 20 fellow volunteers were delighted to work on was donating 84 dictionaries to Kalihi Waena Elementary School.
“The teachers told us that some of the students never owned a book in their life,” recalls Chun, a 27-year member of Rotary. “The children were thrilled about it, and the teachers were happy about it too.”
Principal Jennette Uyeda authorized the January presentation of the dictionaries in the school’s music room, where all 84 third-grade students personally received a dictionary from a Rotarian.
“The dictionary covered a lot of items they were studying already,” Chun adds.
A former banker for 35 years, the Iolani graduate has led several other projects for the Rotary including the donation of $5,000 worth of math teaching equipment for Kaewai Elementary School third-grade classes. Another project is the annual Mary Kawena Pukui award, which honored professor Puakea Nogelmeier in 2005.
His term as president for 2004-2005 is now finished, but Chun is onto something new. He is the president of the Kaneohe Business Group. His wife Janis is also involved in both the Rotary Club and the Kaneohe Business Group. Although they are Waialae Iki residents, the couple worked for more than 17 years in Kaneohe, where he was the manager of Bank of America on Kahuhipa Street for five years before it was sold to American Savings Bank.
The Kaneohe Business Group’s next big project is the Windward Hoolaulea Sept. 24 at Windward Community College.
Both the Rotary Club and the Kaneohe Business Group, Chun says, need more members to help out on committees and move projects forward.
