The idea for the program Rebloom grew out of a problem many event planners face: What to do with all those elaborate centerpieces and floral arrangements once the celebration has come to a close.
“It is our hope that the client or hotel staff will take them home, but even then there are typically a multitude of flowers left over,” says Steven Boyle, master designer and director of design for Current Affairs, Hawaii’s premier event planning and production company.
“Any designer will tell you that throwing (flowers) away is not an option; it’s too heartbreaking to see all of the work destined for the Dumpster.”
Instead, he decided to refashion the leftover flowers into brand-new arrangements and deliver them to nursing homes, hospitals and hospices for patients to enjoy.
“Many of the people receiving our deliveries are forgotten or alone and do not have visitors, let alone anyone sending them flowers. This gives them a moment to forget and to put a smile on their faces,” Boyle explains.
Current Affairs makes deliveries to a different location at least once a week, and encourages other floral partners and businesses to donate any surplus flowers and containers to the program to help seed its efforts.

As with his work stylizing high-impact events, Boyle pays just as much attention to detail in his engagements outside of work. He currently gives his time to Family Programs Hawaii’s Project Visitation, which re-unites foster siblings through regular supervised visits, as well as La Pietra’s Hoopla event and the annual Hawaii Theatre Gala. An avid hiker and movie buff, Boyle also is the fundraising committee chairman for the Aloha chapter of Meeting Professionals International.
