Summer Eguchi isn’t monkeying around. She wants everyone to have a roarin’good time at the Honolulu Zoo this Sunday during the Hawaii Children’s Cancer Foundation’s annual Jungle Adventure Day. The current Hawaii Pre-Teen Miss 2008 and Miss Aloha Tower Pre-Teen 2008 is this year’s advocate for HCCF, and she has taken her role to heart.

“I learned (through working with HCCF) that there are 12,400 children and teens who are diagnosed with cancer. One in four die from it,” the Kapolei Middle School eighth-grader explains. “I would really like to become pen pals and make friends with children who have cancer, and I want to share with them what I love to do, which is singing and dancing.”

Indeed, this talented 13-year-old (her birthday is today) already has the spotlight shining on her. She is a Diamond Head Shooting Star and is set as a co-host for The Next Generation, the new middle school edition of Brown Bags To Stardom (visit www.brownbags2stardom.com). While she lists Judy Garland as a favorite actress and singer, she also enjoys the vocal stylings of Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Alicia Keys and Kristian Lei, to name a few.

The only girl in a family of boys - she has four older brothers and a 1-year-old baby brother -Summer keeps her mom busy with car rides to extracurriculars such as the student council, Tech Hui club and volleyball team. The honor roll student is also very active in her community, having raised funds for Honolulu Broadway Babies for two years, passed out flyers at the Hawaii Missing Children’s Keiki ID Booth, and performed at Ewa Weed & Seed and A+ programs.

Although she will pass her Hawaii’s Pre-Teen Miss title to the next young girl come October, Summer says the experiences and friendships she has gained through this past year are the things she will truly treasure: “It’s better to become a friend than not to have known or met someone. I hope that Jungle Adventure Day will touch someone’s life and that children with cancer see how much we care about them and they are not alone. We are their friends.”

The yearly, fun-filled event is set aside for one day in September, which happens to be National Children’s Cancer Awareness Month. There will be games, bouncers, rides, prizes, refreshments and entertainment by 2007 Na Hoku Group of the Year, Kaukahi, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 7.

Entry costs $5, but keiki ages 6 and under get in for free. Commuters are advised to use the Monsarrat zoo entrance; a free trolley service is available from Kapiolani Community College. Call 528-5161 or e-mail .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) for more info.
