Those looking to get in shape for the new year should move it to Kailua Intermediate School Jan. 29 for a two-hour Zumbathon dance party that will raise spirits and funds in support of the Windward school.

The KIS Zumbathon starts at 4:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Admission is $10 presale, $15 at the door. E-mail KISFundraiser@gmail or find them on Facebook under “KisZumbathon.”

“You can expect to sweat and have fun in a healthy fitness-party environment,” says KIS PTSA treasurer Teddi McEwen, who is in charge of organizing the benefit night.

“I’ve volunteered with school PTAs for the past nine years and got tired of selling wrapping paper, magazines and chocolate! When my friend Kaipo Wallwork-Fake organized the Kailua Elementary Breast Cancer Awareness Zumbathon this past fall, I saw the potential of what could be possible to fundraise and benefit the PTSA of Kailua Intermediate,” she explains.

A certified Zumba and yoga instructor, McEwen has been hard at work since mid-December recruiting instructors, making fliers and banners, and figuring out how to draw more families into the mix.

“Childhood obesity is a serious problem right now,” McEwen says, “and if we get parents to exercise, the children will usually follow.”

Also planned is a classic car show in the parking lot (weather permitting) as well as a movie night in the library for teens. Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase from KIS students.

“With more families coming to the event, I’m hoping more adults will become role models and lead a healthy lifestyle,” she explains.

Both McEwen and her husband, Kane, try to be active and healthy role models for their three children. He is a member of the Rotary Club of Windward Oahu and has coached their son’s Little League team and daughters’ AYSO soccer teams. In addition to serving on the KIS PTSA, she is treasurer for the Kainalu Elementary PTA and is on the school’s “Passport to Wellness” committee, which links eating healthy with exercise events.

“We’re volunteering our time to get on stage in front of 100-plus people to lead a fitness party!” McEwen says. “The energy of a Zumba class is amazing and just needs to be experienced firsthand.”
