Dinosaurs come to life at Pearlridge Center this Friday, and leading brave explorers through a safari train adventure, dinosaur dig and up-close encounter with creatures like Dimetrodon, Triceratops, Mosasaurus and the mighty T-Rex are Toni Lee, Val Crabbe and Charlie Kapua of Pearl Harbor Hawaiian Civic Club.
The PHHCC was chartered in 1964 under the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs as a means to perpetuate Hawaiian language, music, culture and education among residents of the areas between Moanalua Gardens and Pearl City.
Members are active at community events throughout the year, including the Great Aloha Run, Aloha Festivals, various parades, cultural conventions, fishing festivals, food drives and chorale performances, among many. But it is their involvement with the Pearlridge summer family events that is most beneficial for club and community.
In return for countless hours given by dozens of club volunteers, Pearlridge makes a donation to its scholarship fund, which provides native Hawaiian youths much-needed money for college. On average, the club gives away $10,000 each year.
“Civic clubs are organizations that look to better the community in which they live,” explains Lee. “It’s important to educate people so you can have them in the right places to take care of the people of the host culture.”
Lee is immediate past president of the club and was among its original charter members. Younger sister Crabbe joined under Opio status when she turned 12 and now serves as club president. Kapua, a member since 1991, is second vice president.
“Our grandmother taught us that it’s everybody’s business to make a place a better place; it’s like paying rent to be here,” Lee says. “And then you teach it to your children and your membership, hopefully it will carry on in perpetuity. If everyone in the community did something, we’d make it a better place.”
Dinosaurs! runs June 18 through Aug. 15 during mall hours in both Pearlridge Uptown and Downtown centers. Admission is free, but there is a nominal charge for kids to ride the Safari Train.
