With the holidays just around the corner, many of us will likely be indulging in sweet treats soon enough. Luckily, the 22nd annual Dessert Fantasy returns this Sunday, allowing us to indulge for a cause. Sponsored by United Cerebral Palsy Association of Hawaii, the event, which takes place from 1 to 3 p.m. at Pacific Beach Hotel, features 50 vendors with a wide variety of tasty treats.
Winston Chow and the Rising Phoenix Jaycees have the all-important job of making sure that each of these desserts arrive on time and uneaten to the hotel. “We find the drivers to pick up the desserts,” explains Chow, who is a past president and current board member of the Jaycees. “We send the volunteers to the restaurants or bakeries to pick the desserts up and deliver them to Pacific Beach Hotel.”
The Rising Phoenix Jaycees is one chapter of a statewide organization that focuses on leadership development through community service. Chow explains that the Jaycees have been longtime partners with UCPA. He feels helping with this fundraiser is important because the proceeds will benefit UCPA, which provides much-needed services. Cerebral palsy, often caused by damage to the brain, affects motor functions. The effects of cerebral palsy can include lack of muscle control, speech, sight or hearing impairment, and seizures. UCPA provides support programs for people with cerebral palsy and also is involved with education, research and advocacy initiatives.
Desserts to be featured at the event include Lemon Crunch Cake from The Alley at Aiea Bowl, Chocolate Covered Mini Oreos from Chocolate On A Mission, Ihilani Decadent Macadamia Nut Brownies from J.W. Marriott Ihilani Resort & Spa, and Buko Pandan from Max’s of Manila. Vendors also include Tropilicious Ice Cream & Sorbet, Hokulani Bake Shop and Agnes’ Portuguese Bake Shop.
And be sure to bring your appetite because there is no limit to how many desserts you can sample, and each of the vendors will be vying for the prize of People’s Favorite Desserts. The event also includes a silent auction and live entertainment.
Tickets cost $25 per person, and children under age 5 get in free. Call UCPA at 532-6744 for tickets or more information. Tickets also can be purchased Sunday at the door or online at ucpa.org.
