Where and with whom did you see the movie?
We went to Ward Theaters and it was myself, my 7-year-old son Luke and my 5-year-old daughter Alia.
Overall, what did you think? What about your kids, were they entertained?
It was a good movie. I asked the kids to rate the movie and they gave it four out of five stars. It was fine; I enjoyed it it, too. It has a lot of action in it. I was concerned at first because my 5-year-old gets scared really easily, but the aliens were just the right mix of scary and funny.There were moments where both of my kids were laughing out loud. As far as kids’ movies go, it’s pretty good; it’s funny and active at the same time.
Was the story believable?
It was more like a fantasy experience, but believable, yes, in the context of what the movie was supposed to be. It dealt with a lot of good issues, even for the kids at a young age. There was an older-sister character going down the wrong path with a bad boyfriend, and they address that really well. It was like it reached my kids. There were a lot of funny moments in it.

Were there any cool special effects?
There’s one scene where the aliens hit a switch and they turn off gravity and everyone has to float in space.There’s a scene where the aliens take over the grandmother (played by Doris Roberts) and she fights them just like (the characters fought in) Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and that’s pretty funny. Ashley Tisdale is in it, too, who my kids know well from the Disney Channel.
Did you or your kids have a favorite character or scene?
My daughter loves the scene where one of the small aliens drops down into the little girl’s bedroom. They sort of make friends.The aliens insert chips into humans so they can control them with a remote control, and there’s a scene where the bad boyfriend, they make him do silly things to himself like slap himself in the face and run around like a monkey. My son thought that was hilarious.
Who would you recommend this movie to?
I would say it’s definitely for parents with kids between the ages of 5 and maybe 12 or 13. It is a movie that you can go to with your kids and you don’t have to worry about covering up their ears or their eyes for any of the scenes.
Do you and your kids have a favorite movie snack?
It’s always popcorn and kakimochi. My favorite is Sno-Caps.
What’s new?
I’m one of two philanthropy directors for Kapiolani Medical Center. I started full time in November (2008), so about eight months now. I’m basically working with another woman to do all the fundraising for the hospital and get the word out that the hospital is nonprofit. It’s going great, I love it.
We’re really busy getting ready for Kapiolani’s centennial celebration.We’re celebrating 100 years of care for kids in Hawaii. Aug. 26 is a pretty historic night for the hospital. All five local television stations are going to broadcast a one-hour special at 7 p.m. on Kapiolani Medical Center, and on four of those stations it’ll be simulcast. We’re having a huge birthday celebration at the zoo on Aug. 30; people can get free passes on our Web site, http://www.kapiolanigift.org.
