Editor’s Note: Doug Liman has been acknowledged as one of American film’s most vibrant voices, serving as producer of a slew of successful Hollywood blockbusters. Liman served as director/producer for The Bourne Identity, and also was executive producer on the follow-ups in the franchise, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum. His other film credits include Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Jumper, Swingers and Go. Additionally, Liman has also directed commercials for Levi’s, Playstation and Nike, as well as political campaign ads for Barack Obama and Howard Dean.
Overall, what did you think?
I think it’s not only an incredible film, but Wuershan is a brilliant film-maker. There’s so much packed into an hour and a half, and it shows a whole new generation of filmmaking in China and it’s just bursting with energy; he’s on the cutting edge of next generation.
On a scale of one to four stars, how would you rate this film?
I’d give it ★★★★. As a director, I’d never give any of my films four stars because then I wouldn’t need to keep making movies. But Wuershan deserves four stars.
What is the theme/message of the film?
It’s a really fun action-adventure that takes you to a very exotic place. You feel like you’re being given a tour by a local. Wuershan has taken the audience to China and has shown us a really colorful, fun world. It’s so thought-provoking; it’s not a lecture. Like my films, there’s clearly an intelligence behind it but you’re on your own to decipher it. Wuershan was so skillful in weaving the message into the film where you have to find it yourself.
Did you identify with any of the characters?
In a way, I relate to the three lead characters - all in a different way. I grew up in the Upper West Side of New York City, and yet with each one of them, they feel honest to me, and each represents a different side of my personality and my life.
To whom would you recommend this movie?
I would recommend it to both younger people for the sheer energy and spectacle of the film, but also to older people like myself, who are in their mid 40s and grew up with a certain image of China that this film will shatter culturally. You have an image of China as a communist country, but this shows clearly a new generation in China. They’ve gone through a tectonic shift in generation similar to America in the 1960s. They’ve taken the country in a different direction. China has been so successful when it comes to its economy, and it’s clear that the film industry is matching those efforts with what is by far the most creative films of the year.
On a different note, what’s new with you?
I’m currently working on an upcoming movie and multiple television shows. I’ve been enjoying working on television.
