The Devil Wears Prada
Movie Review with Kanoelani Gibson
Former Miss Hawaii and Entertainer
As Told To Melissa Moniz

Where and with whom did you see the movie?

I saw the movie at Pearl Highlands with my sister Maila,Ben Vegas and his wife Josie.

Overall what did you think of the movie?

I loved it! I thought it was a bright and colorful, feel-good movie. It’s refreshing for summer and kind of a chick flick, but I loved it.

Can you tell me what the movie was about?

Well, it’s a girl who is fresh out of college and she’s an aspiring journalist in Manhattan. She settles for a job as an assistant to a fashion magazine editor-in-chief. Basically they are saying it’s a job a million girls would kill for,and even though she lacks the enthusiasm for the job and she has no fashion sense, she’s hired for the job anyway. And if she survives the tyrant of a boss, she’s promised a job at any top publication. Basically she gives up her personal life and her happiness in order to please this woman. But in the end she realizes what’s really important in life.

The Devil Wears Prada

What was your favorite scene?

I loved a lot of the movie.Actually I loved most of it. Stanley Tucci he was in the movie as a supporting actor,he played Nigel. He had a lot of funny lines. One of them, I guess she was asking him something about since when. And he’s like, since 2 became the new 4, and zero became the new 2.And then she asked what about a 6? And he’s like,well,6 became the new 14. So I’m like, great I guess I’m a 14 now. But I think he really adds a lot of flair to the movie. And I think just overall I love the cliche of a goofy girl gone glam because that’s always enjoyable to see because everyone loves to see a good makeover story.

Anne Hathaway also played the ugly duckling who turned into he beautiful princess in The Princess Diaries. Do you think this movie reminded you of that movie?

I think she was still cast for that typical

Princess Diaries role. This one was little more mature and complex, and I think she gained a little more credibility in this one.

Was there anything you didn’t like about the movie?

Not really.I think that women will probably enjoy the movie a lot more. And then anyone who appreciates the fashion world would equally love it.It was kind of a satire of the fashion world and the fashion industry, but it kind of illuminated the culture that indulges in selfishness. I think it could be kind of irritating for some people because not everyone enjoys that kind of lifestyle. And not everyone wants to live vicariously through movies in that sense. Even though I did.I would love New York and I love fashion. She got an endless supply of Dolce & Gabbana and Manolo Blahniks - I wouldn’t mind that.

Do you think they did a good job in casting the roles?

I think they did a perfect job.Meryl Streep was brilliant as she always is.My friend said that she read the book and she said that even though the movie kept to the tone of the book, it was far more entertaining. So I think they did a great job at casting the characters.

In a four star rating, with four being the highest, what would you rate it?

Four Stars.

What’s your favorite movie snack?

Popcorn with butter and mochi crunch.

What’s your favorite movie?

I love chick flicks. Wedding Planner is one that I can watch over and over, Pretty Woman and Goonies.

Who’s your favorite actor/actress?

I have a lot.Favorite actresses I would say Reese Witherspoon and Julia Roberts.Actors would be Jim Carrey and Matthew McConaughey.

What’s new?

I’m a full-time student at UH-Manoa, and I’m singing four nights a week at the Ihilani with a guy named Ben. And I’m also working as a flight attendant at Hawaiian Airlines. So I’m busy.

Is there anything new you’ll be working on, or will you pretty much be sticking to this schedule for now?

For the next couple years while I finish up my degree. After, I plan to teach elementary school and get my master’s in counseling, so I can eventually be a counselor.

Next week: a new movie, a new celebrity
