Where and with whom did you see the movie?
I went to the Regal Cinemas at Windward Mall with a couple of my students.

Overall what did you think?
I enjoyed it and I was expecting not to,frankly.Suspense, horror-type films are not my usual fare, and Nicole Kidman is usually not one of my favorites, but I was pleasantly surprised.I was sucked right into the story.
Did you have a favorite scene?
They did a wonderful thing where in the first few minutes before they rolled the credits, they showed a scene that would later be shown again in the movie and repeated.That scene is shown twice, where she is just frantically going through a pharmacy to find things to keep her awake.And she’s chugging Mountain Dew.So it immediately captures you and why would a woman be doing this saying,‘I have to stay awake, I have to stay awake.‘The original movie, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, was good, but it was very dated.They updated it beautifully.
Were there a lot of similarities between the two movies?
It was the same basic plot, but they did make it their own, where the lead character is a single mother who is a psychiatrist.They did change what they needed to,for instance in this movie her child text messages her. So it really could have happened tomorrow.There are a lot of political references to things that are happening in the news right now.They went to great lengths to make you believe that it is tomorrow.
Because it is a remake was it very predictable?
Not at all. I thought it would be, but not at all. Because they’ve changed some parts of it, you don’t know who is going to come through and who is not.There was no ex-husband in the first film.
Did you have a favorite character in the movie?
Well, probably Nicole Kidman because it’s an amazing performance - she is on screen 95 percent of the film. She is in every single scene, so it must have been very taxing on her. Plus most of it is a giant chase scene too.
Was there a deeper meaning or message?
Oh,definitely.That’s one of the reasons I liked it. It wasn’t just suspense for the sake of suspense.Without giving away the end, at the end of the film even though she does the right thing and saves her son’s life, you wonder if the world is better off or not. They leave you with that idea, is it better for the greater good? The basic message is, at what price is freedom? We have the freedom and individuality ourselves, but at what price are we taking our individuality? Me and my students were discussing it after and they got it too.It was kind of strange because as the invasion is taking place and more and more people are turning into these emotionless zombies, they keep referring to the news in the background,showing how all the countries are getting along and the genocide stops,the wars stop.And all these things that fill our news like rapes and murders are gone because everyone gets along because they all have the same mind. It’s true horror. I was really impressed. A lot of it was the acting.Even in the smaller parts the acting was right on.
Was the plot believable?
They went to great lengths to explain that it is a virus, but of course for the kids the way they pass the virus is particularly gross.Almost like projectile vomiting in each other’s mouths. It’s clear, but it’s still gross. So of course, it still has that appeal to those true horror fans.
On a four star rating with four being the highest, what would you rate the film?
Probably ** . It wasn’t like the best movie in the whole world,but it was entertaining and had value.
What’s your favorite movie snack?
I’m a popcorn and Junior Mints person. I love chocolate, all my kids know that.
What is your favorite movie of all time?
I have my top 10 list, which is constantly changing.Being that I love musicals,Gypsy with Rosalind Russell is probably my favorite.
Who is your favorite actor/actress?
Probably Rosalind Russell, which does make me seem a lot older than I am.
What’s new?
Well we’re going to be able to sell our tickets online this year.We’re up to eight shows,which is going to be difficult and we need volunteers all the time in order to produce all these things. So there’s a new service called showtix4you.com and it’s just starting out.It is specifically like a Ticketmaster for educational theaters, non-profits and smaller kind of places, not like the Blaisdell.They do it at a way reduced rate.We’re going to give it a try this year because it’s time.
