With whom did you see the movie?
I saw the movie with my good friend Gigi at Ward.
Overall, what did you think?
When I first heard about The Mechanic I thought this sounds unusual, what is this about? From the start through the finish it is full of action. Jason Statham is the lead character, and this is probably one of the best roles he has ever played. I highly recommend it to the adventurer, people who like adventure, because this is it, this is the one. Some movies will start out real good and drop off, but The Mechanic is very consistent all the way through.
Was the message/theme of the film clear to the audience?
Absolutely, I didn’t know what The Mechanic was and at the beginning of the movie it starts out and explains basically that “the mechanic” is a for-hire assassin. It goes into more detail throughout, as far as the background with Jason Statham’s part and the description plays out all the way through the end of the movie.
On a scale of one to four stars, how would you rate this film?
I definitely give this ★★★★.
How about the acting? Did anyone stand out?
Statham — I have seen him in other movies and he has always played a B role. But this he was clearly an A role and he played it all the way through. He played a very realistic part and did an exemplary job with it. He played the kind of guy, when you walk away, you have a whole new respect for him and his professionalism and acting. I didn’t think he was capable of this type of detailed acting but he did well.
Donald Sutherland played a good part in this film. He normally does not play an aggressor, but in this he played an aggressive type of role. He almost gets killed early on in the movie and this leads to his son playing an important role with Statham.
Was there a particular scene that stood out to you?
I understand that it is rated R. When I go to a movie I see how it is rated, and when I saw that it was rated R, I figured it would be gory, and there are a couple of violent scenes in the movie that are slightly graphic and they stand out. I would say probably, when you walk away —besides the ending of the story and how it turns out — the biggest thing you’ll walk away with are those scenes. This movie is definitely not for children.
To whom would you recommend this movie? What type of audience?
Clearly adults who enjoy action. The adrenaline junkies, because it certainly gets you going all the way through. Because of the violence, I certainly would not recommend it for any teenagers or children.
On a different note, what’s new with you?
Professionally, I have been with Outrigger for 23 years and I love being in Waikiki. For a while I lived in the Pacific, opening new hotels, spending a few years in Fiji, spent a few years in Palau and a few years in the Marshall Islands. It is really good being back and I love my job, and I am pretty darn lucky to have this job and to work for a unique company like Outrigger.
