Where and with whom did you see the movie?
I saw the movie with my wife Yukie at Ward Theaters.
Overall, what did you think?
Great film, one of the best 10 movies I’ve seen recently, but not one of the 10 best I’ve ever seen.
Were you able to relate to this film on a professional or service level?
It starts off with sort of a tone of every person for themselves. They are in this environment where there is no compassion and you don’t have any friends.
You are responsible for you surviving, and damn everyone else. As the movie progresses, we see the characters grow beyond that. Professionally, for me, we can wind up in situations where we certainly do have to rely on each other, and it always seems to be in a hostile environment.The other thing that was interesting was that the only way these prisoners are going to make it through is by enduring, and sometimes that is what you have to do, you must endure whatever it is, mostly so you can see tomorrow.
Was the message or theme clear?
Very much so. It was a Peter Weir film, and he directed two of my favorite movies, which are Gallipoli and Year of Living Dangerously. I do like political and historical movies too.This movie was mostly about people’s struggles through a very difficult climate or setting as far as natural obstacles. More important, it was how each character had to relate to each other regarding more than just the obstacles of the isolation and where they were, but the obstacles that were brought upon them by society, the Russian-Soviet society, and being in prison.
Did it remind you of any other work in film?
It reminded me of movies I have seen where people have to struggle against the elements, where just a couple men have to struggle against the harsh environments that will eventually kill them. It reminds me of the movie Burke and Wills, which took place in the desert, and was similar to what these characters had to go through.
To whom would you recommend this movie?
It is a good movie for anyone from about 25 and up. It is a bit lengthy, but had some beautiful landscape and scenery throughout.
On a scale of one to four stars, what would you rate this film?
At least ★★★ 1/2, maybe ★★★★ . It wasn’t angels-singing amazing, but it was really great.
Were there any scenes that really stood out to you?
A couple scenes with Ed Harris when he is really sick and they are trying to motivate him to stay alive, that was pretty inspiring.
What about the acting? Did anyone stand out?
Colin Farrell is probably the one you notice the most, and he did a wonderful job. Ed Harris also did a great job as well. The lead character played by Ed Sturgis was not that strong of a character, but there was one woman who did an excellent job and carried her role very well, her name is Saoirse Ronan. Overall, Farrell was the most powerful character.
Can you describe your career in the Navy for us?
I have been a commander since 2008 and I have been in the Navy including my reserve time for about 33 years. I have active duty time of 30 years.
