WELCOME to Kimo’s Vegas ... The Player’s Edge!
Norma Gower proves it pays to talk to your machine
HAVING PLAYED the Megabucks machine since its introduction 20 years ago, Norma Gower said she just stopped by the Fremont to pick up her free gift. She said, “I had already played about $600 on this one machine when I started talking to it and told the machine that I was getting very frustrated. I took another $100, and on the very next pull, it hit.” For $10,762,066 - we’d all better start talking to the machines.
THE HIGHEST price ever paid for a car was $11 million for a 1931 Bugatti Type 41 Royale Sports Coupe (I’d tell you who bought it, but then I’d have to ...). So it was a big surprise when the General Lee from the Dukes of Hazzard sold on eBay for $9.9 million. The auction winner backed out, so the General’s owner, John Schneider (Bo Duke from the Dukes TV series), listed the car again. As of our print deadline, even a visit to Vegas hasn’t been enough to get a starting bid ($100,000) on the 53-year-old car.
Kirk Kerkorian
HIGH STAKES Monopoly ... I’ll take the Bellagio and CityCenter - that’s what American billionaire Kirk Kerkorian may do. He owns 56 percent of the MGM Mirage, and has (as they say in poker) “the nuts” to make that play a reality.
1945 Tourbillion
The watch of the year could easily adorn his wrist: The Girard-Perregaux Vintage 1945 Jackpot Tourbillion was introduced at the Geneva watch show. Each reel has the four card suits and bell symbols; it even chimes like an old slot machine when you pull the handle or hit a jackpot. No word on how much the 18K pink gold watch will sell for, but $10K would be in the ball park.
TWO COMPANIES with tight Island ties will be joining forces in Vegas. The Boyd Gaming Corporation (Vacations Hawaii, Cal, Fremont, Main Street, etc.) has announced a joint venture agreement with General Growth Properties Inc. (Ala Moana, Ward Warehouse, Ward Centre, etc.) to create a 300,000-square-foot shopping experience in its new $4 billion Echelon Place.
$1 MILLION is the prize for next year’s Cannonball World Series. The winner of this year’s event gets a limited edition Saleen Mustang and free entry into next year’s road rally. The race is patterned after the movie (Cannonball Run), and has 400 cars leave from four cities for a six-day race to a Las Vegas finish line. AFTER TESTING 20 machines, the Nevada Gaming Regulators approved a new server-based slot machine. In the near future, the casinos will now be able to download new games (and pay tables and percentages) into the software-based machines. In the future, these machines may even adjust themselves for VIPs or high-rollers. Now that’s scary.
