THINK ABOUT THIS the next time you put a $20 bill into a slot machine ... Kerry Packer was a famous Las Vegas whale (hi-roller) who would win (or lose) $20 million to $40 million on a single trip to Vegas. When he died, his son James became the richest man in all the land “Down Under.” What they say about the apple not falling far from the tree may be true ... however, unlike his dad, James prefers to gamble on owning casinos instead of playing in them. Last week he dropped $2 billion and bought the Cannery Hotel and Casino, Rampart Casino and the Nevada Palace Casino (soon to be called the East Cannery Casino). His company also owns a piece of the Fontainebleau, currently under construction in Las Vegas and Miami, in addition to a casino in Pittsburgh, two in Australia and one in Macau.
THE BIGGEST point spread in Vegas history was the Patriots over the Eagles (24 points) a few weeks ago. The previous biggest spread was set in 1987 (49ers vs. Falcons) and in 1993 (49ers vs. Bengals) at 23.5 points. All records were broken again last week when the Vegas line for the Patriots was set at 24.5 over the Jets ...

DON HO: My Music, My Life is an autobiography co-written with Jerry Hopkins that’s filled with pictures and stories of Ho’s friends and family. Hawaiian105 KINE’s Uncle Sam Kapu got a copy of the book and was telling me what a blast it was being on the road with the original “Donald” (Sorry, Mr. Trump), and what it was like seeing his name for the very first time on the marquee of the Flamingo Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The original shipment of the book has sold out, but you can reserve a copy online now at www.bookshawaii.net.
WE LIVE IN a world of irony ... The World of Concrete show is being hosted in the city once run by the mob - creators of cement shoes.
NEW YEAR’S TAKE ... Paris and Nicky Hilton $500,000, Britney Spears $350,000 and Pamela Anderson $110,000 - it’s all in a day’s pay.
CONGRATS TO ... Lorna Young of Honolulu won $2,074, Elizabeth Ilagan and Ambrosio Ilagan (both from Aiea) won $4,000 and Shari Higa of Honolulu won $8,539 from the video poker machines at the Cal!
AND CONGRATS TO John, Paul, George, Ringo and the gang at The Beatles Love by Cirque du Soleil for their two nominations in the 50th annual Grammy Awards. If they win the Grammys for Best Compilation Soundtrack and Best Surround Sound Album, it’ll bring the band’s total to 20 ... not a bad record for a band that hasn’t recorded together since 1969!
