LAST WEEK the power went out at the Mandalay Bay, Excalibur and Luxor when a transformer near Planet Hollywood caught fire and exploded. The casino generators kicked in immediately, but they only power the casino, so hundreds of folks were stuck in elevators or in their hotel rooms!

VENETIAN, PALAZZO and Sands owner Sheldon Adelson has won a three-year legal battle against an English newspaper called The Daily Mail. The casino owner sued claiming the paper had slurred his reputation, saying he’s “the ruthless casino baron who rules Las Vegas” and that he asked his wife for a divorce the night before she was to have a cancer operation. The settlement was not disclosed, but he’s rumored to receive almost $8 million plus legal fees, a printed apology and retraction.

AT THE GOLDEN NUGGET April 4-6 it’s the $50,000 “Spring Roll” - the craps tourney where the winner gets $25,000 guaranteed. Call casino host John Giannos for the setup.

LOTSA RUMORS floating around about the new Plaza Hotel. Folks are saying that its funding is drying up. Not a good sign after the company set the record for Strip real estate by paying almost $44 million an acre for the land under the old Frontier. However, the owners just got the go-ahead from the Nevada County Commissioners, and are saying the multibillion-dollar, seven-tower project with 4,100 hotel rooms and 2,600 condos - the largest casino on the Strip, a whopping 15 million-square-foot development - will begin by the end of the year.


PREMIER EXHIBITIONS has struck a 10-year deal to lease 50,000 square feet of space in the Luxor. Replacing the IMAX Theater, King Tut exhibit and arcade is an all-new Titanic exhibit (complete with a themed bar and restaurant), a photo op on the Titanic’s bow and a new Bodies exhibit ...opening day TBA.

THE RIO’S Village Seafood Buffet is open again, and it’s the buffet for seafood lovers with freshwater prawns from Indonesia, Pacific salmon, Alaskan king crab, Canadian snow crab, shrimp from China and slipper lobster tails from Southeast Asia ... they go through about 200 tons of seafood annually.
