Akaka aloha

Bob Jones’ column, “Sorry, Dan, It’s Time To Step Aside,” regarding the Honorable Dan Akaka, is off base. Our families and friends are grateful to be represented in Washington, D.C., by Sen. Akaka, a man who embodies what is uniquely Hawaii, the aloha spirit. Ask the many residents of Hawaii who have visited Washington or who have called upon Sen. Akaka’s office for assistance. They will tell you they were treated with great competency and great aloha by the senator and his staff.

Mr. Jones, in asking Sen. Akaka to step aside based on speculation of the best political posturing against former Gov. Lingle, that is not the aloha spirit. By his public disrespectful appeal, Mr. Jones takes away the essence of what makes Hawaii unique.

We hope the senator will continue to represent Hawaii; no one else can do it better. Sen. Akaka is our model to the world, and this world would be a kinder better place if more of our leaders had the aloha spirit like Sen. Akaka.

Scaremongers

A little knowledge is a very dangerous thing, as is shown by Jerry Coffee (and all his Republican cronies), the so-called “experts” who have been appearing on Fox and CNN over the past couple of weeks. They have been trying to convince everybody that the Muslim Brotherhood will take over power in Egypt when elections are held. These “scare-mongers” don’t know anything about the Egyptian man in the street who just wants freedom from a U.S.-supported dictator.

Mr. Coffee condemns the Brotherhood for being involved, along with most Egyptians at the time, in trying to free Egypt from British colonial rule, yet does not condemn Israel for killing British soldiers and blowing up the King David Hotel.

He is obviously very selective when it comes to those who fight for freedom and democracy.

He condemns Hamas, which was democratically elected (as observed by ex-President Carter) just because the results of the election were not acceptable to the U.S. and Israel. How democratic is that?

So Hamas lobbed some homemade bombs at Israel, killing nine Israelis - while Israel turned its military might on Gaza, killing more than 1,300 Palestinians. Does Mr. Coffee recognize something called evenhandedness?
