In a huff
I hope people who voted for Breene Harimoto for City Council, and others in his district, saw Rick Hamada’s column “Akaka Departs; Harimoto Huffs.” Fortunately I do not live in his district (Fort Shafter through Pearl City to Waipio Gentry), but unfortunately all residents of the city will be negatively impacted by his arrogance and lack of critical thinking when it comes to financing the city’s rail plan.
It’s telling that Harimoto ran unopposed in the last election and received just 52 percent of the votes from his neighbors. The 48 percent who left their ballots empty apparently got it right.

Bring ‘em home
I hate to say it, but Patrick Buchanan is making more and more sense lately, especially his most recent column about letting Asia and Europe defend themselves. America has done so much for the rest of the world, but now it’s time to turn inward and do some positive things for our own people. Bringing thousands of soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines home from bases around the world would be a great first step, and have an immediate positive impact on our economy.

Campaign lies
I seldom agree with Susan Page when she writes about politics, but her column “Political Vows You’ll Never See” was on the mark. As an independent (lower-case i), I have voted for Democrats and Republicans, and neither party can claim an upper hand in campaign honesty. That, as much as anything, is at the root of many of our problems in the U.S. today.

Sore losers
Undeniably the most beautiful of our 50 states, Hawaii is known for many enviable things - glorious blue skies, magnificent sunsets, gorgeous beaches, macadamia nuts and delicious pineapples, just to name a few. With the incredible uproar that immediately followed Tia Carrere’s Grammy win, and the unprofessional manner in which some individuals chose to voice their displeasure, I fear Hawaii may very well become known for its “sour grapes” as well.

Geckophobia
Thank you for a great story on our island geckos by Carol Chang. As the husband of a woman who is terrified by geckos and who has unfortunately passed this silly fear on to our daughter, I made sure both had the chance to read the story. Unfortunately, the photos of geckos creeped them out and they couldn’t read it.
Oh well, we tried.
