A no-brainer

If Hawaii’s leaders were truly concerned with the welfare of our people and our natural resources, having a harbor master at Maunalua Bay in Hawaii Kai - as Ron Mizutani suggests - would be a no-brainer.

That, alas, seems to be the problem with too many at the Capitol. Makes you wonder if no brains is a qualification for office or if that Big Square Building just sucks the smarts from people.

Better person

Mahalo to Jade Moon for a beautiful column, quoting a letter from the mother of a special-needs child. It brought tears to my eyes, and a greater understanding of what a family we know through church deals with. I will try to be a better person because of it.

Not American way

Thanks to D.A. Ryan and John Shintaku for their recent letters pointing out America’s awful war-fighting record since World War II. In each of these wars - Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan and now it seems Libya - our leaders have chosen to go to war when these nations did not attack the U.S. or our vital interests. The way I was raised and educated, this is not the American way. Yes, we fight like hell when attacked, as was the case in WWII, but initiating conflicts should never be our way.

Think it through

Michelle Malkin’s rant about making 70 the new retirement age is not well thought out. Fact is, many older workers do not choose retirement, it is forced upon them when companies opt to go with younger - and cheaper - labor. Ms. Malkin may also have noted the high unemployment rates around the country. For many folks in their 60s who would like to work, they are forced to draw Social Security benefits because they have no other choice to survive.

Retaliation?

I’d never thought of Hawaii as a likely place for a terrorist attack. But after Hawaii’s own Barack Obama decided to attack Moammar Gadhafi’s forces in Libya - and knowing the dictator’s record of terrorism - I can now all too easily imagine terrorists with ties to Libya exacting revenge on the president’s home town.

By the way, I’ve noticed all the talk of building a monument to Obama here has quieted down. As it should.
