The Y way

On behalf of the YMCA of Honolulu, I would like to extend my appreciation to reporter Chad Pata and the staff at MidWeek for the cover story on why I left the Judiciary to head up the YMCA, and more importantly the role the Y plays in helping Hawaii’s youth and families.

The response we have received since the story appeared has been remarkable! I have received many, many letters, emails and phone calls, mostly from people I don’t even know. They have offered their support to the Y and shared their stories of how the Y helped them change their life for the better. We are deeply grateful.

Michael Broderick,
President/CEO YMCA of Honolulu

Way out east

Dan Boylan’s column “Things Are Booming Out West” borders on class warfare. He seems to think that diverting selfish travel funds wasted by the East Honolulu traveler to the rail project will solve the traffic problem on the H-1.

I assume he means another mass transit system will relieve overcrowding on TheBus. But since there isn’t overcrowding on TheBus, I suppose we’ll just have another “white elephant” for tourists to enjoy while H-1 traffic continues to grow (these tourists are not from East Oahu).

Racist? C’mon

Liberals are always talking about the crassness of the political debate in America - and then ultra-lib Dan Boylan jumps into the story about Barack Obama’s birth certificate by calling all “birthers” racist. I am not a birther - my keiki o ka aina have birth certificates that look just like the president’s - but resorting to the lowest of criticisms (racist!) is uncalled for.

I expect better of Mr. Boylan and MidWeek.

Americans first

Thank you to MidWeek for publishing Roger Simon’s column “Spending Billions Abroad, Pinching Pennies At Home.”

It defies logic - and patriotism - that America so eagerly spends billions of dollars (borrowed from China, mostly likely) on foreign wars in places where we have no national security interests, while Congress is trying to cut benefits to Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare.

It’s time to put Americans first, and time for Americans to demand just that from our elected representatives.
