Rail comparisons
Rail proponents often mention specific prominent international cities having rail. But they fail to mention what the populations of those cities are. According to Google: Singapore has 4.6 million people, Hong Kong 7 million, Tokyo 12.9 million. Proponents may want to Google the Honolulu population - a “massive” 900,000. Less than one million.
Somehow the comparison does not pencil out.
We were simply not made for rail, nor can we afford it.

Elephant rights
I’m not a huge Bob Jones fan, but mahalo to him for his column “The Elephant In The Closet,” about riding elephants in Thailand, and their imprisonment in zoos.
I believe that is the next “rights” issue we must confront as a society - animal rights. These elephants certainly have been stripped of their rights and dignity.

Bye-bye, Borders
Like Dan Boylan, I was crushed at the closing of Borders-Waikele.
Like the professor, I spent many a contented hour there, browsing books, listening to music, enjoying the “bookish” ambiance with like-minded folks.
I will miss it.

Hero’s story
Please tell Susan Page to stick to “human interest” stories such as the one about her friend dying of Lou Gehrig’s disease, “A Special Kind Of Hero’s Fight.” Her political columns tend to put me off, but this one was so well told it brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for sharing, Ms. Page, and condolences to you and Mark’s family.

Snake eyes
Another great editorial cartoon from Dick Adair, “Snake eyes.” The poisonous snake with dice for eyes crushing the life from Honolulu says it all.

Wedding vino
As a bride planning a wedding, Roberto Viernes’ column “The Perfect Wines For A Wedding Day” was the perfect column. Thanks for giving me some good things to think about.
Cheers!
