More cell risks
I returned home to read Jade Moon’s column “Weighing The Risks Of Cell Phones” after a shopping trip to Safeway and Longs on Pali Highway.
The risks, I must say, go beyond cancer and distracted drivers. While turning right into the parking from Pali, I almost hit a young man who walked directly in front of my car while texting. I hit the brakes to avoid him, and he looked up as if annoyed at me.
After doing my shopping, I observed a young mother holding her toddler daughter’s hand while texting with her other hand as they walked through the parking lot, and walked directly behind a van as it started to back out. Fortunately the driver saw her in the rearview mirror and stopped, because the young woman didn’t look up.
What message could possibly be so important that it’s worth risking your life or your child’s?

Yes, America first
Thank you, Lee Matsuda, for the letter “America first!” I was unaware of the America First Party to which Mr./Ms. Matsuda refers, but after checking out the website, I am on board. I am so tired of our government sending billions of dollars to other countries while our schools and infrastructure decay, and with so many Americans looking for work and suffering. Yes, it’s wonderful when American citizens donate money to, say, tsunami relief in Japan from the goodness of their hearts, but it’s far different from sending billions of tax dollars to Arab nations as Obama has proposed.
It is indeed time for our politicians and government to put America and Americans first.

Autism hope
What a fantastic Newsmaker feature by Steve Murray on the autistic young man who is running a business because his father refused to follow the usual track for autistic kids. It actually brought happy tears to my eyes. Congratulations to both Mark and Brian Shiraki.
Hopefully this story will help change the way both parents and doctors treat autism.

We need jobs
Arianna Huffington is right, “The Economy Stinks!” While I appreciate what Barack Obama has done to stabilize a teetering economy, so much more needs to be done in terms of putting more Americans back to work. I voted for him in 2008, but am willing to consider any Republican who can come up with a better economic plan - one that is good for all Americans, not just the wealthy.
