No Israel aid
I must say that I agree with John Leong and his “America First” philosophy, but why does he mention only monies going to “Arab” countries out of all the other recipients? Most monies given to Arab countries have strings attached and have to be spent on American products, especially arms.
Meanwhile, the U.S. gives approx. $8.2 million per day to Israel, at the beginning of each year, so Israel can collect interest on it. This, while Israel is one of the richest countries in the world.
This money would be better used for the poor, hungry and undereducated Americans who are suffering in this recession.

Special indeed
Thank you so very much for the great feature article on our Law Enforcement Torch Run. We have received so many comments on it, and everyone was so excited to see this great group of people be acknowledged on the cover of MidWeek.
All of us at Special Olympics Hawaii appreciate everything you folks at MidWeek continue to do to highlight the accomplishments of our athletes, and the incredible volunteers who support our efforts.
On behalf of our athletes, their families and friends, mahalo nui loa,

NFL or gays?
I listened to Gov. Abercrombie’s statement concerning the amount paid by the state for the NFL Pro Bowl and his desire to terminate this expense and redirect the funds to more useful purposes. In their MidWeek columns, both Coach Price and Mufi Hannemann hit the nail on the head: These funds do not come from the general fund, but rather from the HVCB funding, and generate huge amounts of revenues for both the state coffers and local businesses.
It amazes me that, in pandering to the “gimme” crowds, the governor is ignoring the economic realities that events such as the Pro Bowl generate for the local businesses, and not just the “big guys” either, but right down to the one-person businesses that participate with the Pro Bowl Block Party, which is held as part of the festivities associated with the Pro Bowl.
That the governor would rather see Hawaii generating revenues from the promotion of civil unions, well, the idea of our Hawaii gaining renown as the gay honeymoon capital of the Pacific is downright scary. We’ve acknowledged the rights of our gay and lesbian community through legislative actions, but I don’t think that means we want to be faced with it at every turn!
