Bad voters
Thank you for publishing the truest column I’ve ever read, “Blame Voters For The D.C. Mess” by Roger Simon.
The same is true of the various messes on the City Council and state Legislature.
We get the government we vote for. The lesson is simple: Vote wisely and carefully.

A kolea lover
I enjoyed Don Chapman’s column that mentioned plovers. I am a longtime friend of the Pacific golden plover or kolea, and have been following them for many years. I have a route I do in the Hawaiian Memorial Park and Hawaii State Veteran’s cemeteries in Kaneohe. On July 20 I did a quick cruise along my route and saw 10 kolea on the field behind the Hawaii State Veteran’s Cemetery Administration Building. Normally, there are only a couple of kolea that have regular territories on that field. I think these were kolea en route to areas further south of Oahu. Other friends have reported seeing a lone kolea here and there around town this week.
The adult Kolea start returning to Hawaii in July, especially those that may have had a failed nest this season. Last year I saw kolea on July 11.
I want to point out that most of the adults are back on their territories by late August. The juveniles, or this year’s crop, begin returning in September and there are great battles to be seen over territory for a few weeks. It is so miraculous that these young birds find their way to winter habitat in Hawaii on their own.
All kolea lovers should have a place where they can observe these wonderful birds.

Welcome back!
I really enjoyed Don Chapman’s column about the shower trees. I hadn’t realized there are so many varieties. It truly is “one of the good things about Hawaii.” Isn’t summer fabulous?
I am also glad he mentioned kolea. They arrived here at Bluestone about July 24. I have a special one I’ve named Maile and she has been here around my building for at least four years that I know of. Keep up the great articles.

Funny crimes
Thanks for publishing Bruce Cameron’s column. He is one of the funniest people ever. His most recent column “A Man Born To Solve Crimes” had me laughing out loud.

Bad investment
My family of six pays $1,260 for premium seating at the UH football games. Since the stadium staff does not monitor non-premium seat fans from entering our section, there have been 20 to 30 “moochers” per game. I complained to the UH athletic director and to the stadium manager, but their response has been, “There is nothing we can do.” If that is the case, I suggest that they eliminate premium seating. A small percentage of fans are being assessed outrageous fees for this “privilege.” I am close to cancelling our season tickets and withdrawing my support for UH Athletics.
