Just say aloha

I always enjoy reading Bob Jones’ “Just Thoughts” column and today’s was a good example. There are so many American historical myths and legends that one could write a book about them. I’m sure some have. But Bob chose some very good examples, and none would write it better than he.

And his closing line reminds me that I keep expecting our Hawaii-born President to forego the overused “and God Bless the United States of America” when ending speeches and simply close with “Aloha.”

Beauty of cursive

I was saddened to read Larry Price’s column “Cursive Loses Out To Typing.” I can recall when people took great pride in their cursive writing, in a way that made writing resemble art. And there is something distinctive in every person’s writing style, as unique as a fingerprint.

I had to take a typing course in high school, way back in the day, and as I recall it was one semester, and we had it down.

So what will Hawaii schools teach once kids have mastered their keyboards which it seems to me they’ve already done.

Water pioneers

Speaking as an “old man of the sea,” thank you to MidWeek and the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation for publicizing this year’s four inductees into the Waterman Hall of Fame though with half of them being wahine, maybe the foundation should rename it the Waterman and Waterwoman Hall of Fame.

I was especially taken with the photo of diver/swimmer Aileen Riggin Soule with her Olympic teammate Duke Kahanamoku. Classic!

It’s wonderful to recognize those who went before, and to imagine the daring it took to venture into the ocean with “prehistoric” surf boards, such as Peter Cole and Ethel Kukea did. Today we’re following in all of their wakes.

End gay stories

What’s with Jade Moon and her penchant for writing about gays and lesbians? So there’s a gay comedian coming to town who cares? Contrary to the headline, yes it is too a joke.

Surely there must be more important topics to write about, and I urge Ms. Moon to look around for them.
