An enormous mahalo to MidWeek‘s Nicole Kato for her Newsmaker story about our Lanakila Meals on Wheels program, our growing waiting list of more than 90 Oahu kupuna due to limited funding and our hope to create a special Christmas delivery.

In less than a week, MidWeek readers have stepped up and begun donating so much to help us serve more seniors in need. Since the story ran, we’ve raised almost $10,000 in donations for Lanakila Meals on Wheels. We’ve received several calls from people wanting to get involved such as Hanafuda Hawaii, which was so moved by the story they generously arranged to donate a portion of 2012 proceeds and teach Hanafuda to our Kupuna Wellness Center activity leaders. In addition, we’ve had people dropping off Christmas gifts for seniors nearly every day, and others who want to help out with delivering meals and in the office. These gifts, combined with the generous donation of 800 goody bags from Longs Drugs, are going to make each of our seniors very happy when they receive their Christmas Day delivery.

While $193,000 is still needed to ensure continued services and help eliminate the current waiting list, these donations will go a long way, providing many more nutritious meals for homebound kupuna.

I don’t usually agree with Bob Jones’ opinions, but I have to give him credit where credit is due on his recent comments about the salary of the UH football coach.

Coach Greg McMackin is a good man, a fair coach and a decent example for his young players, but it is a major indictment of our misguided sense of value that he should be the highest-paid public servant in our state. It is a terrible statement when we show our adoration for those who entertain us by rewarding them so highly above those who work in the professions that educate us, keep us healthier, and serve and protect us. Coach Larry Price was a great leader when I was attending UH years ago, a fine local man serving his community well for a fair salary.

And why do we have to look elsewhere for our head coaches and university presidents? Several former Hawaii high school and college football coaches are working on the Mainland in the college and pro ranks and doing very well. Surely we can find local men and women to fill the top positions at our state university.
