Medals mahalo

I am among those WWII AJA veterans whom you featured in the Dec. 14 issue of MidWeek. I’m sure all those in the group will join me in thanking you for the highly complimentary story along with great photos contained therein.

I am writing for another reason. The medal replicas we received along with 800 (total number) recipients in attendance at the event in Washington, D.C., were donated by Cole Chemical and Berryman Chemical Inc. Donna Cole, daughter of a 442nd RCT veteran, was there representing her father and the company. I would not want her to read the article, which implies that we paid for the replicas, overlooking her generosity.

Can you imagine the donors having paid roughly $40,000 for the replicas?

Additionally, Cole Chemical, I understand, was among the major donors for the event, indicating that their total contribution possibly far exceeded the amount expended for the medal replicas.

I thought you might appreciate knowing these facts.

Thank you again for giving us all those compliments.

Sharing ohana

So many times I wanted to write to tell Ron Nagasawa “Mahalo.” Since it is the holidays, this is an appropriate time to do so. Mahalo nui loa to Ron for all the sharing of his life’s happenings. I look forward to reading his column before looking at anything else in that issue of MidWeek. I know I’m not the only person who enjoys it, because he shares things of his ohana that touch the heart. Mostly, he allows us to share the laughter with you. We all need that.

Much aloha,

A losing package

Don Chapman’s comment about the UH football payper-view package this season “worst purchase I ever made” was right on the money. I have subscribed to the package since it was first introduced, as it brings our family of 15 together to enjoy the games and each other. While the UH football team underperformed this year, leaving many of us disappointed, the other sports events offered as part of the package to justify the high subscription price were embarrassingly bad. My wife and I feel we were ripped off. While I have nothing against UH women’s basketball or men’s basketball, I don’t see why I should pay for something I would rather not watch. If next year’s package offers a similar deal, we’ll catch the football games the next day on free TV and potluck with the family at the beach on football game days.
