Hamada hysteria

Rick Hamada has emerged as one of the last holdouts among the die-hard opponents of mass transit for Oahu.

His blind opposition clouds his perspective on all issues related to the project. And so it is with his reporting of the Mufi-Lingle “dustup” over collection of the new excise tax.

The facts speak for themselves, and in stark contrast to Hamada’s fiction. The City Council voted in favor of an increase in the excise tax to fund a rapid transit solution for Honolulu, the Legislature passed a bill to increase and collect the new tax, and the governor allowed the bill to become law. No amount of whining and obfuscation from Mr. Hamada will change any of that.

By the time this letter gets published, any minor misunderstandings regarding collection of the excise tax will hopefully be ironed out and transit will not have been “scarred and rendered derailed before it begins” as prophesied by Mr. Hamada.

Nor will Mayor Hannemann likely need to “renounce his comments and extend a conciliatory branch to the governor,” as demanded by Mr. Hamada.

All everyone needs to do is follow the law and not be distracted by politically motivated hysteria.

Just a coincidence?

I just have to ask: Does anybody else think it’s a little bit funny that Hawaiian Airlines sued the new go! airlines just days after the go! president Jonathan Ornstein appeared on MidWeek‘s cover last week?

I used to support the two inter-island carriers, but in recent years I feel like their monopoly is practically holding us up at gunpoint with their ridiculously high fares. The story of the family that couldn’t visit ohana on the Neighbor Islands for years, but thanks to go! now can, says it all.

Separated at birth

Are you sure that’s not MidWeek editor Don Chapman on the cover of the June 28 issue? If not, then he and Jonathan Ornstein must have been separated at birth.

A proud patriot

Regarding Bob Jones’column “Hawaii, Military Need Each Other”:

So Bob Jones wants to rename everything patriotic to not include the word patriot because it seems to cause him pain. Patriot still means the same to me; someone who loves this country and would die to protect it. Must be I’m not as cerebral as Mr. Jones.

And while we’re on the subject of names, when I meet someone named Jones I don’t shudder with despair and think they must be a moral idiot consumed with hatred for those who don’t see things in the highly enlightened way he does. I reserve my judgment until the character is revealed.

Mr. Jones, we get it: You hate President Bush and anyone who supports him. You can stop saying it now.
