I just wanted to thank you for MidWeek‘s recent cover story on our Bank of Hawaii Charity Walk for IHS. Your consideration and support are very much appreciated. The event was a great success, and I wanted to let you know that the final amount raised for IHS will exceed $125,000 (contributions are still coming in.) Again, a warm mahalo to you and your staff for all of your efforts and interest in this community event.

Weyand and women
I’ve met Gen. Fred Weyand on a number of occasions, and recall a wonderful MidWeek cover story on him some years ago, but Bob Jones’ column about about how Gen. Weyand brought women into the U.S. Army on equal footing with male soldiers was news to me.
Thank you, Mr. Jones, for bringing this important story to light.
And thank you, Gen. Weyand, for being a great American and for being man enough to do the right thing. I salute you.

There goes Price
There Larry Price goes again, demeaning anything having to do with the Mainland. His column “Rating Hawaii From The Mainland” about a study by a national group that found the way our public schools rate teachers to be dead last in the U.S. Instead of using this as an opportunity to improve our public schools, Mr. Price leads the way in dismissing their findings.
I can only surmise that what really set him off is that the people who conducted the study have blue eyes.

Socialists and cars
I always enjoy reading Dan Boylan’s crude sense of socialism that uses punishment rather than reward to regulate our use of private cars. While Mr. Boylan eschews his own use of rail, he has no problem in punishing others who prefer their cars to riding an inflexible rail system. While Mr. Boylan cites the Bill of Rights as void of explicit reference to the unfettered use of a car on the road (the Founding Fathers preferred driving American cars rather than Hondas), I prefer to reference the Declaration of Independence which ensures life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness - freedoms that socialists like Mr. Boylan prefer to regulate.
There are cheaper solutions (too many to cite here) to early morning and late afternoon traffic that involve rewards to drivers. All we need are government managers using ingenuity and coordination. Mr. Boylan forgets that perhaps others would like to drive where rail does not go to buy a bottle of wine, visit a book store, or shop on the way home. Unfortunately, Mr. Boylan is not happy with your choices.

Can’t hate god
In response to David Blanchard’s letter stating that atheists hate god, he couldn’t be more wrong. We believe that there is no God, so we can’t hate someone that does not exist. What we hate is religious zealots who keep shoving their religion in our faces and trying to use our tax money to force their religion to be part of our government and our lives.
Christians counter with the claim that we atheists are also trying to promote our religion. We don’t have a religion to promote.

A name in vain
David Bailey so very eloquently expresses himself and the rest of us atheists in his letter “Atheist belief.” It is the best statement on the subject I have come across. Thank you, David Bailey.
By the way, although I’m an atheist, I occasionally invoke other peoples’ gods, usually while playing golf or tennis.

Game of etiquette
Regarding recent columns and letters about Michelle Wie:
Golf is played by an individual unless it’s a fun tournament and consists of a designed format. Golf is a game of good sportsmanship, fellowship and etiquette. I’ve played golf for half a century (not very well, but enjoyably) and benefit largely from the exercise and accretion of friendships. I recently observed from a distance the golfers in the Manoa Cup and noticed how
those involved in the matches walked and talked with respect and camaraderie throughout their matches. I have noticed golfers from opposing schools visit on
the practice greens and driving ranges. Isn’t this a fine example of well-coached youngsters?
