Bones brouhaha
I still cannot come to grips with the local obsession with buried bones!
First, it would seem logical that on an island with limited space there can be only so much land devoted to cemeteries. Secondly, as one Native Hawaiian told me, in the old days they could only dig the graves with their hands and sticks so, naturally, most of the graves are close to the beach or in sand dunes in the heavily populated areas mostly on the Leeward side. Lastly, despite of the apparent importance of the burial sites the areas were not marked and nobody made a fuss until the haoles started building on them.
In Poland, where I am from, and in most of Europe you do not own a gravesite, you only rent it. I know this for a fact because I still contribute to the preservation of my grandparents’grave. You basically rent it for 20 years and then have to renew for another 20 or the grave gets dug up and the bones are buried in a common grave. The plot then gets re-rented to somebody else. We visited my wife’s grandparents’ cemetery in Germany and there was no sign of them because, apparently, the relatives who stayed in Germany were too poor or did not want to pay.
So let’s give the Hawaiian bones a decent burial - who knows who they are anyway? - and let’s get on with our lives

So Gerard Hamm thinks it’s wonderful that in Canada and Washington state they don’t have as much respect or reverence for whales as we do in Hawaii: “No one up there ever talks about or even thinks about protecting whales from ferries.”
I would not consider that a compliment to people in the Northwest.

What’s wrong with Michelle Wie? As an observer looking in from the outside, I have to agree with Don Chapman, who reminds us that when Tiger Woods enrolled at Stanford as a freshman, “Mommy and Daddy” didn’t join him. And look where Tiger is at today!

What a treat!
Thank you to Sarah Pacheco for writing a Good Neighbors feature on my daughter Kaela’s trick-or-treating to raise money for kids with cancer. As a result of the article, we got two more trick-ortreaters and a lot of attention! Kaela far exceeded her goal of $1,000 - we are over $8,000 and still counting! That money will go a long way toward helping Hawaii’s children with cancer and their families.

Which America?
I am not a Dan Rather fan, but his column about choosing what kind of a country we want America to be - one with the freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution or one where we willingly give those freedoms up - was right on. I hope my fellow Americans choose freedom.

Here’s my theory: The powers that be in this country are purposely dumbing down the population - as referenced in a letter from Ann Matsumoto (“That’s not news!”), so that all we care about is celebrity gossip and having material goods, and then they lower the boom and America becomes a dictatorship.
