Defecting to Dems

Excellent column by Larry Price on the latest state legislator to defect from the Republicans to the Democrats - because as Republicans they are nearly powerless at the Democrat-dominated Legislature. Sad but true, the old boys and old gals of the Democratic Party are still firmly in charge in this state.

Christian majority

In her letter, Dorothy Farmer states that the USAis a “Christian nation.” Wrong. We are not and have never been officially a Christian nation. Our Constitution and laws prevent that from happening. What we are is a nation in which a majority of people happen to be of the Christian faith.

And if we were a true Christian nation with a true Christian president, we would not be invading other countries.

Ms. Farmer, like many Christians, think that they own Dec. 25. Many of us recognize Jesus only as a carpenter/philosopher with a great message of love and tolerance. Unfortunately, not much of that is taught in modern Christianity, or practiced.

Misinformed

I’m sure Dorothy Farmer means well, but I can only assume that she was simply not given a good education in American history and civics - perhaps in a school where the Jewish seven-day creation myth of Genesis was taught as science.

‘Dumb’ is right

In Bob Jones’ column on Mitt Romney and the Mormon religion, he used drawings from the Institute for Religious Research. If he wanted information about Mr. Romney’s church, all he had to do was go to lds.org and his questions would be answered. Perhaps he could ask our good mayor or a prominent bank president who was featured in MidWeek if he could join them for Sunday service. Or why not ask some of the UH Warriors?

And to show how small minds think alike, Esther Wong writes in a letter that after reading Mr. Jones’s column, she won’t vote for Romney.

Just imagine if all of Hawaii observed the LDS strict lifestyle: no alcohol, no smoking, no drugs. Hawaii is currently No. 1 in drunk driving deaths - innocent lives wouldn’t be lost. The state has already instituted a no-smoking ban in public places, which most seem to favor. We have seen how many local families are destroyed by drugs.

As Mr. Jones said, “there’s probably few things dumber a columnist can do than write about some-body’s religion. It’s absolutely nowin.” He got that part right.

Mormon example

When someone gives rationalization or so-called apology for talking about someone else’s religion, he/she is basically hiding behind the apology in order to condemn and mock. And so it is with Bob Jones’column on Mitt Romney’s religion.

I’m a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a convert to the church. The gospel of Jesus Christ helps me become a better person. My previous church only asked for money to be in the pastor’s pocket. The priests ignored the poor, and in fact asked even the poor to give. The poor went without the necessities of life so the minister could have a nice car, house and food.To me that kind of church is not a religion, but a shame.

I suggest that you look for what Mitt can do when he gets into office and the good in this man. The world needs role models, not critics.

The Mormon Church does nothing but good. We don’t put down anyone’s religion. We recognize the good in all people, in and out of our church. We contribute to the community. We do our best to build strong families, for that is what makes strong community and a firm nation. We do our best to live our religion.

Shocking criticism

Dan Boylan’s moderate criticism of Hawaii’s Democratic Party shocked me. His normal obsequious pandering to the people who so poorly run this state is usually by rote.
