Dan Boylan is quite right in his column “Dems’ Blessings And Challenges.” After Hawaii-born Barack Obama’s securing enough delegates to become the Democrats’ presidential nominee, it’s crucial that the Democrats put an end to the ruinous Republican rule of the past eight years, which GOP candidate John McCain supports.
On another note, while it’s amazing that a hapa-African-American is the Democrats’ presumed candidate, it’s just as amazing that someone born in Hawaii could become president. Who’d have ever thought that could happen? (OK, so Ed Case has probably fantasized that he could become president, but other than that ...)

Cell phone risks
The most disturbing thing about Rick Hamada’s column “Kids And Cell Phone Addiction” is what he didn’t say - studies have found that some of the chemicals used in making cell phones and their batteries, as well as the electronic signals, can be harmful to human brains. How much worse it is to inflict that on children in the name of “security,” or because the other kids have them?

Old ladies rule
As a senior citizen, it was fantastic to read Chuck Shepherd’s Weird News column “Don’t Mess With Old Ladies,” in which he told about women aged 66 and 95 physically subduing criminal attackers. As I tell my granddaughters, “You gotta be tough to be old.”

Homeless types
In his column of May 21, Bob Jones seems to include all homeless people into one category of whom none is deserving of consideration for a roof over his/her head. In his column in the same issue of MidWeek, Jerry Coffee seems to understand that there are three groups of homeless people that can be rated as to whether members of each are deserving socially irresponsible or suffering under mental disorders.
Accordingly, any of those persons in that group that Coffee identifies as “economically homeless,” would seem to be deserving. As such, should he/she be lumped in with those in the other two groups when housing is being considered for homeless people?

Iwase, Aiona praise
By what right does Bob Jones presume to take cheap shots at Randy Iwase and Duke Aiona in his column “Mostly Cons Regarding ConCon2.” These are two dedicated public servants whose shoes Jones isn’t fit to polish.
I’ve been privileged to number both these gentlemen among my friends for many years. While their political affiliations and philosophies might differ, they exhibit character, integrity and a dedication to public service that Mr. Jones should applaud.
Without Randy’s years of hard work there would be no Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park, a true gem of growing economic importance that continues to attract organized local, state, national and international athletic competition and provide superb passive recreational opportunities for our families.
And the number of Island lives that have benefited just from Duke’s unflagging efforts to combat juvenile drug abuse can’t be calculated.
Randy and Duke are humble, selfless family men, team players, behind-the-scenes doers, and not horn-blowing drum-beating bombasts.
They personify the old axiom that there’s no limit to what you can accomplish if you don’t care who gets the credit. We need more people like them in public office and fewer people like Jones taking potshots at them. He owes both of them a personal apology.
