Bob Jones raised some questions regarding the proposed Ward Neighborhood Plan in Kaka’ako in his Sept. 17 column. It is important that, as we look at the proposed plan, we take a long-term view of the future of Kaka’ako and our community.
Growth will happen in Hawai’i. We can’t stop it. But instead of development sprawling out to Oahu’s rural areas, isn’t it better to focus growth in already urbanized areas like Kaka’ako? Instead of piecemeal construction, isn’t it better to have a master plan that creates open space where we currently have rundown warehouses?
Instead of creating more traffic congestion, isn’t it better to create a livable, walkable community in the heart of Honolulu where people have easy access to their jobs, entertainment, and shopping and dining options?
This is the vision that the Hawai’i Community Development Authority has for Kaka’ako. And it is a vision that can become a reality with the proposed Ward Neighborhood.
We appreciate Bob’s, and everyone else’s, feedback. And with proper planning, we are confident that we can protect the viewplanes that Bob cherishes and at the same time build a community that contributes to a more sustainable future for all Hawai’i residents.

Thanks to Susan Page for writing a lovely column about attending the Republican Convention and about meeting Sarah Palin’s family. They seem like such nice people, and I appreciate getting this inside scoop.

I am not certain the purpose of Susan Page’s column, “Connecting at the Convention.” I think that it is inappropriate for MidWeek to give preference to John McCain’s Hawaii publicists.
Nevertheless, I wish to comment. The column represents to me the Republican Party’s attempt to divert from the very important issues of this country: huge debt, bankruptcy, bailouts of big corporations, non-ending war, poverty increase, lack of affordable housing and health care, failing education for our children, to name a few issues.
As a mother and grandmother, I must express the opinion that Sarah Palin’s selection for vice president is a dangerous farce on the part of a pandering and rudderless presidential candidate, John McCain, who has been a part of the demise of our beloved country.
Sarah Palin’s selection is a slap in the face of all women like me who worked hard to pass ERA, who support a woman’s right to run for political office, to receive equal pay and an equal education. Sarah Palin’s position: No to sex education, birth control, pro-choice for women. We see the results for her family. Do you want these results for yours? It should be your choice!
Palin’s “no” position on environment protection, alternative energy development, freedom of speech, banning books, gun control, the separation of church and state, polar bear survival and her complete lack of experience to be vice president should be the last insult by the Republican Party toward women and the American people.

Ron at the dump
Ron Nagasawa’s column “ADay At The Dump,” was hilarious! As it happened, my husband Eddie and I were in line three trucks behind Ron when I noticed him getting out of his truck, and as soon as the door closed he turned and tried to open it again. My first thought was, “OMG, he locked the keys inside, how are we going to reverse from here.” But then I recognized Ron and started laughing. I told my husband I bet he would be writing about this experience in his MidWeek column in the near future.
Sometime later I read his column about the incident and started laughing again. He made our day with a great laugh, and we look forward to reading more of his funny stories in the future.
